ENAC Shapes and Colours

Neuro-SensomotoricPSY0

One shape at a time, filled or empty, in one of two colours. Two rules tell you whether to press X or N, and the colour says which rule to use. Each shape shows for half a second, and the exam format is 32 shapes, one every 3.2 seconds.

~4 min

Overview

The whole test is two rules held under time pressure, so cut them down: once you've worked out the two shapes that get X, everything else gets N. Picture those two shapes instead of reciting words, so whatever appears either matches the picture or it doesn't. Run the example as if it counted. It's on the test's own rules, so it's your warm-up, and the test follows it straight away. And rest one finger on X and one on N before you start.

Assessments

Part of the Air France Cadets selection at ENAC (PSY0) battery as “Formes et couleurs”.

A rule handed over in four lines before anything starts, then thirty-two shapes one at a time, each carrying a shape, a colour and whether it is filled or empty, each answered X or N on the keyboard. One press is final, right or wrong comes up at once, and a shape left unanswered runs out of time. The part people are caught by is the same every session: the optional examples run on the rule the scored series runs on, and it is not put back on screen when the series starts. Each shape shows for half a second, and you have a few seconds to answer it before the next one comes. The shapes, the colours and the rule are drawn fresh every run.

Battery mappings are based on public information and may change.

Two rules

The colour tells you which rule to use. Under the pink rule only the shape matters, and under the blue rule only the fill does. So a filled shape isn’t always X: it’s X when it’s blue, but when it’s pink only its shape counts.

Rule 1
If the shape is pink:
press X if it’s a diamond, N if it’s a circle
Rule 2
If the shape is blue:
press X if it’s filled, N if it’s empty

Four shapes

Press X or N for each one. Here the shape waits for you. On the test it shows for 0.5 s, and the next one comes 3.2 s after it.

Game Phases

1

Two Cases, Not Four

Learn the two shapes that get X. Anything else gets N.

2

Colour Picks the Rule

Check the colour first, then look only at what its rule names: the shape, or the fill.

3

Keep the Example's Rules

The test starts straight after the example, on the same rules, with none of them on screen.

4

No Mistakes, Then Speed

A wrong key costs you more than a slow one. Find the pace where you make no mistakes, then stay just under it.

ENAC Symbol Counting

Two counting exercises, and every board gets interrupted twice by a grid of colour words. In Attention 2 you count one symbol among two others that look a lot like it. In Attention 3 you count the x signs, minus after a / and plus again after a +. Each grid stays open for 12 seconds. In Attention 2 you tick the words written in their own colour, and in Attention 3 the ones that aren't. The exam format is 10 boards of each, 90 seconds a board.

ENAC Sustained Attention

You see four characters in four places: NW, NE, SW and SE. Then each board shows four grids of characters, one in each place, and for each place you say whether its own character is in its grid. The grids are built from those same four characters, so only the one that belongs to the place counts. The exam format is 3 series of 5 boards, with 3 minutes for each series.

ENAC Dials Reading

The exam format is 5 boards with 90 seconds each.
