EFTA Admissions: HireVue, Psychometrics and the Dubai COMPASS Day

Lesson 2 of 3•2 min read•8 exercises

EFTA publishes its admissions funnel in unusual detail, including what each stage costs — and since the assessment fees are non-refundable, knowing the sequence is part of the preparation.

The stages, as EFTA publishes them

  • Online application (free): passport, photo and high-school certificates covering English, Maths and Physics; EFTA reviews applications within five working days.

  • HireVue video interview (free): pre-recorded — you record and submit responses at your convenience, which means there is no excuse for an unrehearsed answer.

  • Psychometric assessment (AED 1,000): tests of leadership, decision-making, emotional stability and work attitude, plus abstract and spatial reasoning, together with a one-on-one interview.

  • Dubai assessment, Day 1 (AED 500): three one-hour tests of 30 multiple-choice questions each — Maths, Physics and the COMPASS aptitude test.

  • Dubai assessment, Days 2-3 (AED 4,200): an English language assessment covering reading, listening and speaking, and the GCAA Class 1 medical examination including an eye exam.

The COMPASS test at EFTA

EFTA's own pages describe COMPASS as an online aptitude test of five modules involving visualisation and the use of controls: hand-eye coordination, hand-eye-foot coordination, spatial orientation, multitask management and short-term memory. The COMPASS Test Preparation course on this platform covers the test in depth — work through it before booking flights to Dubai.

How to prepare

Match your training to the paid stages. For the Day 1 tests, the Mental Math game rebuilds calculator-free speed and Technical Reasoning and Physics Knowledge refresh the physics fundamentals — thirty questions in an hour rewards accuracy over haste. For COMPASS, the Hand-Eye-Foot Coordination Test covers the two coordination modules directly, Spatial Awareness and Spatial Orientation the orientation module, and the Multitasking Test the task-management module. For the psychometric stage, take the Big Five test first and answer honestly — the one-on-one interview will probe your profile. EFTA publishes no retake policy, and the fees are non-refundable: arrive at each paid stage trained, rested and rehearsed.

What the test looks like

A worked example from each exercise in this lesson, exactly as the test presents it.

Math: Full

Example: a question from the mix

The Full test draws from all seven math categories — integers, decimals, fractions, time, weight, operators and percentages — one question at a time. Here is a representative decimal item; time and weight questions appear in their own stacked layout.

13.6+2.75
A)16.35
B)15.95
C)16.75
D)17.85
Explanation

Line up the decimal points before adding: 13.60 + 2.75 = 16.35. The wrong options are small offsets of the right answer — four tenths light, four tenths heavy, a point and a half over — so estimating “about sixteen” is not enough; the hundredths have to be right. Because the categories are shuffled, read each question on its own terms before reaching for a method.

Math: Full

A mixed practice test combining all math categories — integers, decimals, fractions, time, weight, operators, and percentages — with a per-question timer.

Technical Reasoning

Inspect a technical construction of gears, pulleys, racks and rods, and pick the option that allows (or disallows) the indicated movement.

10 minIntellectual
On a balanced seesaw, a 40 N weight sits 1 m from the pivot. To balance it, where must a 20 N weight be placed on the other side?
A0.5 m from the pivot
B2 m from the pivot
C4 m from the pivot
D1 m from the pivot

Physics Knowledge

Answer high-school-level physics questions across mechanics and fluids, electricity and magnetism, optics, heat and energy — predicting how physical scenarios behave, not just recalling formulas.

10 minIntellectual

Spatial Awareness

Visualise a 3D shape from a fixed viewpoint and pick the matching 2D view. Tests mental rotation and spatial perception under time pressure.

Spatial Orientation

Read your compass heading and a beacon's bearing, then judge where the beacon lies relative to your aircraft. Tests spatial orientation and sense of direction under time pressure.

Multitasking Test

Two tasks at once: scan number grids for duplicate pairs while answering spoken questions from your phonebook, agenda, mental math and word categories — some of which must be answered at an exact moment on the clock.

Hand-Eye-Foot Coordination Test

A real-time three-axis coordination test. Keep the aircraft centred on the target runway while periodic disturbances push it left/right, forward/backward, and roll it from side to side. Best practised with a game controller or rudder pedals mapped to the three control axes.

Big Five Personality Test

A scientifically grounded personality inventory based on the IPIP-NEO-120. Rate 120 statements to map your profile across the five major personality domains — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism — each broken down into six facets.
