Technical Reasoning

Intellectual

Inspect a technical construction of gears, pulleys, racks and rods, and pick the option that allows (or disallows) the indicated movement.

~10 min

Overview

The Technical Reasoning test measures your technical insight: your ability to trace force, rotation and direction through chains of gears, pulleys, racks and pivot rods. Each question presents a target movement and four candidate constructions; in 'allows' mode you pick the one that produces the target movement, in 'disallows' mode you pick the one that fails to. The 'None of the above' option is always available — and is sometimes the right answer.

Example: which one allows the movement?

The top figure shows a construction with arrows for the desired movement. Trace the force through each option and pick the one that produces it — the correct construction is highlighted below.

Which of the following technical constructions allows the indicated movement?

Explanation
When the ball is pulled down, the rod on the right must swing down. (a) blocks because three gears jam each other. (b) attaches the rod on the wrong side of the pivot, lifting it instead of pulling it down. (c) turns the wrong way: pulling the ball spins the gear clockwise, the linked smaller gear counter-clockwise, so the rod swings up. The correct construction is the only one where everything turns the right way.

Game Phases

1

Configure

Choose a mode (allows / disallows / mix) and duration. The mix preset draws from both pools.

2

Reason

Trace the rotation and force through each construction and pick the option that satisfies the prompt.

3

Review

After finishing, review your score and inspect the explanation for each question.

Instrument Comprehension

Read cockpit instruments and reconstruct the aircraft's situation: match an attitude indicator and heading compass to the right silhouette, or — in the cut-e-style RBI/GYRO format — add heading and relative bearing to find the NDB beacon's zone.
