Equation Completion

Intellectual

Fill each equation's gaps with digit tiles 1 to 9, each usable once, so the given result is correct. The faithful cut-e (Aon scales eql) digit entry format, plus our multiple choice practice variant.

~5 min

Overview

Equation Completion trains fast mental arithmetic in the digit entry response format used by cut-e (Aon): the scales eql test, carried in Aon's smartPredict era under the Numeracy and digitChallenge branding. Each item shows an equation with empty gaps, visible operators drawn from plus, minus and multiplication, and a given result. You fill the gaps from a tray of digit tiles 1 to 9, and each tile exists only once per item: a gap pair summing to 10 needs 4 and 6, never two 5s. Select a tile first, then click a gap to place it, exactly as in the real test, and the Next arrow appears only when every gap is filled. Any completion that makes the equation true under the standard order of operations counts as correct. The real test presents around 15 questions in 5 minutes, and the 5 minute preset mirrors that pacing; difficulty grows within the same paradigm through more gaps, longer chains and placements where multiplication precedence matters, never through double-digit tiles. The Multiple Choice mode is our own practice variant: the same arithmetic, but you pick the missing number or operator from four options, including operator gaps the real eql never shows. It remains a useful drill for the underlying skill, which also powers everyday flight-deck estimation.

Example: fill the gaps with digit tiles

You are shown an equation with empty gaps, fixed operators and a given result. Select a digit tile first, then click a gap to place it; the tile's slot in the tray goes empty, because each digit exists only once. The Next arrow appears when every gap is filled. Here the item ▢ + ▢ = 11 has been answered with 5 and 6.

5+6= 11

Explanation

Any pair that truly sums to 11 counts: 2+9, 3+8, 4+7 and 5+6 are all accepted, in either order. Two 5s is impossible, because there is only one 5 tile. Harder items add more gaps, longer chains and multiplication; multiplication binds before plus and minus, so in an item like ▢ + ▢ × 4 = 14 the fill 2 and 3 works because 2 + 12 = 14.

Game Phases

1

Configure

Choose Digit Entry (the real cut-e format, timed runs of 2, 5, or 8 minutes) or Multiple Choice (our practice variant with question or time presets).

2

Complete

Digit Entry: place tiles into the gaps until the equation is correct, then press Next. Multiple Choice: pick the completing option before its timer runs out.

3

Review

Inspect your score, per-difficulty breakdown, and every equation with your completion and a valid solution.

Data Interpretation

Read data from a chart or table — bar, line, pie or table — and answer a numerical question or judge a statement True, False or Cannot Say, one item at a time against the clock. Play with a single chart per question, or the cut-e-realistic tabbed workbook where finding the right dataset is part of the task.

ENAC Mental Calculation

Four series of ten boards, back to back, each on its own clock. You type the result of a chain of additions and subtractions, type the value of the last letter in a small system, choose the narrowest of 10 intervals that holds a result, then tick every one of 7 intervals that does. On the ENAC EPL form, every chain in the first series ends on a multiplication and each series gets 4 minutes. On the Air France Cadets form, the first series is sums only and each series gets 6 minutes.
