ENAC Memory Calculation

IntellectualPSY1

You get a calculation, then a letter, then another calculation and another letter, and so on. At the end of the board, you type the letters back in the order they came. The exam format is 20 boards, from 3 letters up to 9, with 5 seconds a calculation and 1 second a letter.

~16 min

Overview

The letters are worth as much as the calculations, so never let the letters go to save a result. Three calculations in four are subtractions, and half of those come out below zero.

Assessments

Part of the ENAC EPL selection (PSY1) battery as “Calcul et mémorisation”.

The day's hardest test for most candidates, and a long one: fifteen to thirty boards whose letter strings grow from three to nine, a calculation for five seconds and a letter for one to three. The letters are given back in order, typed into an empty field or ticked on a grid, and they are worth exactly what the calculations are worth, which the day states on screen.

Battery mappings are based on public information and may change.

A calculation, then a letter

  • Each calculation is two products, subtracted or added, like (6 × 8) − (9 × 5). Type the result, which can be negative.
  • Each letter comes right after a calculation. Hold on to it, along with the ones before it.
  • At the end of the board, type the letters in the order they came. Each letter counts in its own place.
  • In the exam, a calculation stays up for 5 seconds and a letter for 1 second, and you get 10 seconds at the end to type the letters.

There’s no clock here. Press Enter after each result and after each letter.

Game Phases

1

Say Them Over

Repeat the letters in order under your breath while you calculate, adding each new one at the end.

2

Product, Product, Sign

Work out the first product and hold it, then the second, then subtract or add. Check whether the result is below zero before you type it.

3

Fingers on the Keys

Rest a finger on the key of each of the first letters, up to four, and keep the rest in your head.

4

Guess, Don't Skip

Lost a letter? Type any letter in its place, so the ones after it stay where they belong.

ENAC M2-back numérique

Digits come up one at a time, a new one every 3 seconds. From the third one on, you say for each digit whether it's the same as the one 2 before it. The exam format is 62 digits, 60 of them with a question.

ENAC M2-back couleurs

Coloured squares come up one at a time. From the third on, say whether each one is the same colour as the one two before it. The exam format is 42 colours, 40 answers, in 2:06.

ENAC Memory N-Back

Letters come up one at a time, and for each one you say whether it’s the same letter as the one three, four or five before it. Capitals and small letters count as the same. The exam format is two tests back to back: a 3-back then a 4-back for ENAC EPL, a 4-back then a 5-back for Air France Cadets. It hasn’t been set since 2020.

Visual N-Back

Shapes in colours go past one at a time. On every one, say whether it is the same shape AND the same colour as the one a few places back — and the lag you are matching against changes from block to block.

ENAC Running Comparison

A stream of simple calculations, one at a time. For each one, tick whether its result is identical to or different from the one it's compared with: the result just before, the one two back, or a fixed value X, depending on the block. The exam format is 100 answers in four blocks of 25, about 12 minutes.

ENAC Reversed Series

Digits come up one at a time in the same spot, a second each. When they’ve gone, you type them back in reverse, the last one first. The sequences grow from 4 to 9 digits. The exam format is 12 sequences, about 3:30.
