Prepare for Rex (Regional Express)

Rex (Regional Express) runs its own battery at the cadet selection — a basic flight skills assessment in an ELITE S623 simulator, with no commercial vendor behind it.

Rex screens cadets with its own process rather than a commercial test battery: the aptitude element is a 30-minute basic flight skills assessment in an ELITE S623 simulator at the Australian Airline Pilot Academy, alongside interviews and, for some candidates, a mathematics or physics test.

No Rex (Regional Express)-specific course yet

Rex (Regional Express)'s selection uses a basic flight skills assessment in an ELITE S623 simulator, which we do not train for specifically. The general aptitude course still covers the abilities it measures.

Rex (Regional Express) is Australia's largest independent regional airline, operating an extensive Saab 340 network that connects metropolitan centres with regional and remote communities. After a period in voluntary administration, the group was acquired by the US aviation holding company Air T in December 2025 and continues its regional operations under the new ownership.

Flying for Rex

Rex recruits ab-initio pilots through its cadet programme at the Australian Airline Pilot Academy (AAPA) in Wagga Wagga, which operated continuously through the group's restructuring. Graduates move into Rex ground school and a Saab 340 type endorsement with a path onto the airline's regional network.

AAPA's cadet selection includes the WOMBAT situational awareness and stress tolerance test, a dual joystick tracking task with competing bonus tasks that measures attention management over a long session. The tracking and time-sharing games on this platform train exactly those skills, and practising them builds the sustained control accuracy the WOMBAT rewards.
