Most operators screen with the same aptitude tests, so a general assessment course still covers the bulk of the selection.
Flight Training College (FTC) is a professional pilot school founded in 1999 at George Airport on South Africa's Garden Route, an area prized for its year-round flying weather and internationally equipped airfield. Approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority as ATO 1533 and led by an Airbus A330/A340 training captain from South African Airways, it has spent more than 25 years training career-focused pilots from South Africa and abroad.
Training at Flight Training College
FTC trains from the private pilot licence through the commercial pilot licence to ATPL level, with instrument, multi-engine and instructor ratings along the way, and is additionally accredited by the SACAA for language proficiency and radio licence testing. Rather than running its own airline-branded cadet scheme, the college prepares graduates to compete for airline cadet programmes and direct-entry positions, drawing on the airline experience of its senior instructors to guide that transition.
Entry requires the usual South African prerequisites — a Class 1 or 2 aviation medical, sound mathematics and physics grounding, and for international students a valid study visa — with training paced to each student's progression. Because FTC's graduates go on to face airline cadet and direct-entry selection boards, where computer-based aptitude and psychometric testing decides who advances, practising those assessments alongside flying training is a sensible investment in the career that follows.
